Dance Technology with Linda Ryan

Dance Technology for (Advanced) Adults

This 2-hour workshop includes a dance class, a short lecture, and a Q & A session all centered around the role of digital technology in art and performance. Come and learn about the performances Linda creates and make some for yourself! Dance experience preferred. Suitable for ages 16 and up. Wear simple dance attire with socks or bare feet.

Linda holds a BA in Dance from the George Washington University's Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, where she received the Luther Rice Research Fellowship as well as the Enosinian Scholars Grant. She is an award-winning dance researcher, conducting movement research and experiential choreography both internationally and at home in the US. Her previous performances include work by The Maida Withers Dance Construction Company, Vladimir Conde Reche, Annika B. Lewis, I-Fen Tung, and Anton Ovchinnikov. Linda worked in Washington, DC until 2018 and is now based in upstate New York.

Join PlySpace and BSU School of Art, for a final projection performance of the Our Patterns Muncie project.

This multi-channel installation in the courtyard of Ball State University’s Art and Journalism building represents an emotional physical culmination for the Our Patterns - Muncie project: a three-week collaboration between initiating artist and PlySpace Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado and over 100 students and 5 faculty members of the school of art’s 2D Design Fundamentals program.

Throughout the project, students responded to project prompts provided by Diacon-Furtado and facilitated by the BSU faculty. Each prompt was posted on Instagram at @Ourpatterns_Muncie, and is still available for the public to follow along with the project. In order to give the students and public a way to watch the iterative creative project unfold, the students were instructed to post their working and final designs on Instagram, creating a collaborative digital "quilt" with blocks of pattern.

The project continues to live on indefinitely as a digital community quilt displayed through Instagram (@Ourpatterns_muncie), and as a testament to the power of forming intentional communities through creativity.

On Thursday the 12th of November, we will present the final installment, a multi-channel installation that will feature the large-scale projections of student-designed patterns in a random sequence, injecting chance and randomness into the quilt as a way of making new links and discoveries in this collaboratively built visual language.

This event will be held outdoors in the BSU School of Art Sculpture Courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The projections will be visible from 6:30 - 8 PM. Masks are required. This event is free and open to the public.

Mon Oct 24 and Weds Oct 26 – Learn to create engaging content like selfies or reels with special backgrounds with The Selfie Scene, located in Madjax. Then create your personal brand and put it on your own merch using equipment in the Design Lab! 

Do you love board games? Join us for this fun and creative workshop where youth and adults will work together at making their own! You’ll learn what goes into making a good game, then design your own prototype using equipment in our Design Lab. Registration requires at least one youth and one adult. Families may register as a unit for up to 6 people.

Join Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning for a Design Thinking workshop that is specifically designed for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. This hands-on experience will help students tackle complex challenges through systematic, creative problem-solving. Come and learn more about how to think like a designer!

This workshop is offered in Partnership with the Ball State University R. Wayne Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning.

April showers bring May… plants! Come explore what plants need to grow. We will experiment with growing conditions including soil, music, lights, and water. Participants will be able to take home their own potted plants to continue their scientific exploration.

Join us for a four-day summer camp designed for middle school students who dream of becoming the next big YouTube sensation! VLOG VENTURES

Our four-day camp is designed for elementary aged students and their families to learn the ins and outs of creating YouTube content together. Led by professional teachers, you’ll learn about video production, internet awareness, and career exploration in media fields.

Bots & Beyond

Can you build with the technology of the future? During this very hands-on camp, students will explore an introduction to robotics, engineering, and coding. Students will work together to design, build and program their bot, compete in challenges, and explore the way robotics technology is being used in local workplaces.

cyanotypes

Using one of the oldest photographic methods, create your own work of art in cyanotype’s blue signature color. Using the sun, participants will create cyanotype photograms (sun prints). Compose your own custom artwork inspired by architectural designs and line art.

back to school sublimation

Design and create images to sublimate onto your own custom water bottle and notebook. You may use your original artwork, bring digital photographs, or create a new design to decorate your own unique items.

sound synthesizer

Participants will build a simple electronic circuit that creates a musical tone with a pitch that can be changed using a light sensor. The instrument will be mounted in a keepsake box along with a mint-tin speaker. There will be an explanation of how the circuit works and suggestions for future development of the instrument.

INTRO TO DESIGN

You may not have noticed it before, but the spaces that we live, work, learn, and play in have all be designed by someone. Sure, some have been more intentional and certain details are often afforded more attention, money, and effort, but, nevertheless, decisions have been made. Sometimes the decisions were even made with you in mind!

Join faculty and students from the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning to explore the processes designers use to shape the world around us. This is part one of a two-part workshop series. This introduction will provide you with foundational skills that you will practice and exercise before our second workshop’s showcase event.

This workshop is recommended for 9th-12th grade students with an interest in design, engineering, and/or the built environment.

All of our workshops and classes are led by professional makers, artists, entrepreneurs, educators and community partners. We strive to provide high-quality and unique learning experiences. Registration will close up to 72 hours prior to the start of the event to provide time for instructors to prepare.
