Chew on This: What's your Recipe for Community?
6:00pm to 8:00pm @
Legacy West African Cuisine
3124 N Granville Ave, Muncie, IN 47303
Cost: $30 Food is fundamental to both our lives and relationships. We organize our days around meals and relationships around gatherings that commemorate milestones. Whether these are the daily gatherings around the kitchen table, or the yearly traditions of holidays and celebrations, food is often the centerpiece of the day and what we serve matters. How does food connect you to community, family, and history? What food traditions do you and your community hold and why? How does food connect you to communities other than yours, building bridges at the table? Can food serve to build and maintain community?
Join Indiana Humanities on Thursday, Oct. 17, as we ask the question, “What’s your recipe for community?” during a special Unearthed-themed Chew on This. Sign up for one of six locations around the state where you’ll share a meal from a local restaurant and a fun, insightful conversation with other curious Hoosiers. Each table will be led by a knowledgeable facilitator, someone to help us grapple with questions about how food acts as a convener in our lives and relationships. Your ticket price includes your meal and an unforgettably engaging experience.
FACILITATORS
Conversations will take place at different locations around Indiana, all at 6pm local time. When selecting your ticket, please pay careful attention to the restaurant cuisine and your dietary preferences/restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.). All locations will have these different dietary options available. Your ticket price includes a meal, non-alcoholic drinks, and tax and tip at one of the locations. Alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase directly from the restaurant. Refunds are not available after 72 hours in advance.

"One World, One Sky" is a brilliant program that follows Sesame Street's Big Bird and Elmo as they explore the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a new friend from China. Together, they take an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon, where they discover how different it is from Earth. They will also find shapes in the sky that will help them find the North Star. This cross-cultural adventure opens children's eyes to the sky, helping them see how people all over the world are connected.
Best suited for families and groups with pre-K through 1st grade learners, all ages are welcome.- Holiday Open House 5:00pm to 9:00pm @ E.B. and Bertha C. Ball Center, Ball State University 400 N. Minnetrista Blvd., Muncie, IN 47306
No Charge—Reservations NOT Required
Each year, the E.B. and Bertha C. Ball Center hosts a Holiday Open House as a part of Minnetrista’s Enchanted Luminaria Walk. During this 2-day event, you can tour our beautifully decorated Ball family home, listen to musicians, and see local artisans.
The first floor features floral arrangements donated by local florists. Many of the trees and rooms are decorated by members of the community. This is just one event that the Center hosts to preserve the Ball family history and to recognize their contributions to the community.- The Christmas Star 5:00pm to 6:00pm @ Charles W. Over the years many people have tried to explain the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem, as described in the Bible. Can the star be explained as an exploding star, a comet, or some other natural event in the sky? Potential natural explanations for the Star of Bethlehem and common modern-day misconceptions will be discussed.
Suitable for all ages 10+, all ages are welcome.- The Christmas Star 6:30pm to 7:30pm @ Charles W. Brown Planetarium, Ball State University 2111 West Riverside Avenue
