When a musical theatre fanatic needs an evening away from it all, he turns to his favorite album-the 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone. As the stage transforms from his living room to the hilarious and unpredictable world of this show-within-a-show, we meet Janet Van De Graaff, a showgirl attempting to leave the business to get married. But leaving is not as easy as she hopes when her producer is pressured by gangsters to keep Janet in the show. Two-time Tony Award-winning actress and star of the Broadway production Anything Goes Sutton Foster joins us to direct this delightful tribute to the magic of the American musical!

  • Dala 7:30pm to 12:42pm @ Pruis Hall, Ball State University
    Cost: $10 to $22

Juno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala write and sing in harmony best described as angelic.  These two best friends met in their high school music class in 2002; they have since released five albums and toured extensively across North America. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, Dala are now poised to bring their fresh brand of acoustic pop music to the world.

Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and insightful. Amanda's ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila's velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark.

"There's nothing pretentious about Dala's music; it's stripped
down and laid bare. That's not to say it is without polish - far from it.  Sheila Carabine and Amanda Walther have worked hard to exploit every facet of their extraordinary musical blend, and it would be just as at home in a 1960s coffeehouse as it is now on the contemporary concert stage".  - Andrew Craig, Host of CBC "Canada Live"

The sheer joy with which they perform is infectious, turning first-time listeners into instant fans.  Dala are equally entertaining between songs, telling funny and down to earth stories that make every show unique.  Dala have opened for artists such as Tom Cochrane, Stuart McLean of the CBC's Vinyl Café, Richie Havens and Arlo Guthrie. No strangers to the festival scene, they have also performed at The New Orleans Jazz Festival, The Edmonton Folk Festival, California's Strawberry Festival and Mariposa. In 2009, they were the only Canadian act invited to play at the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival.

"Dala can sing! What beautiful flights of melody and harmony,
reminiscent of the Everly Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, Emmylou Harris and associates; though Dala can trade a melody line and leave one wondering who is taking the lead and simply leave one behind when the harmonies kick in." - Peterborough Examiner

  • Trivia Brawl 9pm to 12:42pm @ Doc's Music Hall 215 S. Walnut

Every Sunday, egos are crushed and legends are born at Doc's Sunday Trivia Brawl. Come and play for free, solo or with a team, and show off your command of all knowledge trivial. Win, and split up a a $50 Doc's gift certificate on booze, food, or merchandise. Every game is six rounds of trivia questions on a wide variety of topics in pop culture, science, history, and current events. Every tenth question is part of our inadvertent quest to discriminate against the deaf, and has players listening to a song and attempting to identify its title, band, and album. The sixth round is a special visual aid round in which the blind are instead at an unfair disadvantage. Team signup starts at 9pm, and unless we go into a Sudden Death Lightning Bloodfeud Overtime Round (of Death), the game tends to wrap up at about 11pm.

A bookend for the original Middletown research into the impact of industrialization, the film explores the meaning and significance of deindustrialization by examining the experiences of plant's workers and the community. In doing so, the project touches on several of parts of the center's agenda. It documents the experience of deindustrialization in rich fashion, it creates and exploits digital resources connected with Middletown research, and it has provided a group of Ball State students with a unique immersive learning experience. Fifteen students participated in the filming, editing, writing, and historical research connected with the film.

  • Lend Me a Tenor 7:30pm to 12:42pm @ University Theatre, Ball State University
Cost: $7 to $13 (see description)

Students from Ball State University's Department of Theatre and Dance will combine a whirlwind of mistaken identities, slamming doors and compromising plot twists in the hilarious farce "Lend Me a Tenor," opening on the University Theatre stage March 29 at 7:30 p.m. Additional performances are scheduled March 30-31 and April 4-7, with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. April 1. "The play was a smash hit on Broadway and continues to be popular with audiences nearly 30 years later," said Michael O'Hara, director of the production and associate dean of the College of Fine Arts. "I'm thrilled to return to one of my favorite comedies."

The play starts on the biggest night in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. The year is 1934, and the guest artist, world famous Italian tenor Tito Morelli, is nowhere to be found. Even worse, when Morelli finally appears, a blackout-inducing combination of alcohol and sedatives leaves the company's assistant manager, Max, believing he is dead. What follows is a chain reaction of hilarious confusion and mistaken identity as Max tries to save the performance in this screwball comedy.

Students have been rehearsing the play since the beginning of February. A farce typically takes time to get all the mechanical aspects worked out, doors opening and closing, sleight of hand, timing and several props, O'Hara said.

"Because this cast is made up of undergraduates, the physical comedy they're able to achieve is simply amazing," he added. "The amount of energy and physicality they infuse into the comic moment is worthy of anyone's attention."

Tickets for the performance cost $13 for the general public, $12 for faculty and staff, $10 for senior citizens and $7 for students. They are available from the University Theatre Box Office, open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact the box office at 765-285-8749 or visit www.bsu.edu/theatre for more information.
