"Free Range" - 313 S Walnut"Free Range" is an exhibit of paintings by local artist Brett Volpp. Mr. Volpp is a graduate of Delta High School and studied art under recently retired art teacher Gary Huggler. The interest in painting continued after high school for Brett and he received a BFA in painting from Indiana University in 1996. Work by this artist is on display at the Alchemy Restaurant in Bloomington and at the Hoosier Artist Gallery in Nashville.

Garfield Illustrator Mike Fentz - 112 W JacksonMike Fentz, the former head illustrator for the licensing program for Garfield, will be doing caricatures outside of Cortex from 6pm to 8pm. His caricatures and paintings. Ball State saxophonist Amanda Fratangel will be performing.

"Artists, Faces, and Faraway Places" - 308 E Main"To capture beauty or reflect the personality of an individual is ultimately fulfilling, down to my soul," says artist Ron Richcreek. With photography, he tries to present the aesthetics of a subject in its natural environment in a manner that is pleasing to the eye and stirs an emotion in the observer. With graphite, his goal is to capture a two dimensional likeness of the subject. In clay, he tries to create a sense of rhythm when developing the shape of a vessel to make it visually pleasing.
"Artists, Faces, and Faraway places have always been a passion of mine. As a teenager, I found photography as a form of self-expression; documenting the places and the people I thought were unique. Photography expanded my interests into the study of drawing and, recently, working in clay.
"My intention for the past four decades has been to catch an emotion and reflect the subject's personality. I grew up with my mother’s black and white family photos and looked through the pages of Life magazine which depicted the joys and tragedies of the world. I saw the impact photography made on our society, even through advertising."

"Back to the Old School" and "The One of Many" - 224 E MainTom Spoerner spent twelve years as the Chair of the Ball State Art Department, where he encouraged scores of students in their artistic pursuits. Spoerner’s own art studio work paused as the professor completed his doctoral degree in art education and then served in various admistrative positions for the university. He was active in art education work at both state and national levels and the recipient of numerous honors, including the Art Education Association of Indiana Distinguished Fellow award. He retired from academic life in 2002.
"I started painting again in the summer of 2009," Spoerner explains. While most of the professor’s works are hard-edge or abstract designs, he considers himself to be "old school" in his both his approach and appreciation of art. "I am not concerned with super realism but want my paintings to look like something, have content, and be colorful. "All of my paintings have a story behind them."
Working in both painting and photography, the professor has exhibited in national, regional and local exhibitions; however, this will be his first show in 34 years, which he titled, "Back to the Old School: Painting Again after a 34 Year Hiatus." Spoerner will speak about his work at 6 PM.
Gordy Fine Art and Framing provided its first art award at this years’ Annual Student Show at Ball State. Arranged by their gallery director, Braydee Euliss, the award gave a student an exhibit of their work at the downtown gallery. Chris Graham was chosen by the juror to receive this award and will be showing in Gordy’s small front gallery during the month of June. Graham is fascinated with big cities, and most of his subject matter involves urban scenes. The new graduate has decided to move to Chicago, and this show, "The One of Many," commemorates the big step he will be taking in this move. Graham works in woodblock, lithography, intaglio and serigraphy to create the contemporary urban landscape.

Muncie Civic Board Members will be on hand to tell you about the upcoming 2012-13 theatre season.

Photography of Earl Dunbar- 125 E CharlesMuncie resident Earl Dunbar has always carried a camera with him during his career as a salesman; stopping to get that "situation" picture. While travelling, he had many opportunities to capture beautiful scenery in places such as Hawaii and Australia. Since moving to Indiana, Earl and his wife Penny have found many photographic opportunities while exploring the state. He is now concentrating on macro close-ups of what nature has to offer.

It’s TherapyApril at the Artist Within will feature the work of two East Central Indiana artists.
The collaborative exhibit by these two ladies will showcase the varied interests and mediums of their work. The title for the Two Artist Show is “It’s Therapy” and expresses the feelings these ladies share in regard to their commitment to creative expression. Judy Bunner will have several pieces of her beautiful jewelry and Loretta Wray will showcase her pottery. Each artist is unique in her creative approach to her chosen medium as you will see in the pieces they have selected for this exhibit.
Please make plans to meet these two very talented and creative ladies during the First Thursday opening from 5-8pm April 3rd. Light refreshments will be served and the reception is free and open to the public. It will remain on display through April 26th.

Contemporary Perspectives in PhotographyJoin Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 6:00 to 9:00pm for an opening reception and art show featuring two Ball State University seniors Lorin Ashley Bowen and Alea Bowling. Their combined show will featuring works of photography focused in areas of their interest – love and life.
Lorin Ashley Bowen was born in Jefferson City, Missouri. She is currently living in Anderson, Indiana with her husband. Before moving to Indiana, she received her Associate of Arts at Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri. Now, she is attending Ball State University and will be graduating spring 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts, Emphasis in Photography.
As an artist, Bowen is drawn to things that are familiar, and relevant to everyday life. The series being portrayed is titled, A Quick Fix: A photographer's experience in a fast food society. She uses photography to record her ideas and experiences with domesticity. Bowen enjoys being able to create imagery that documents and comments on every day household situations.
Alea Bowling is a senior at Ball State University. She will be graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts, Emphasis in Photography. Her first major series is a work in progress titled Love in the Making. This project is the culmination of her studies at Ball State, the final requirement for her degree and honors college designation.
Prior to beginning her senior thesis, Alea has also done commission work for several clients, including the Ball State Choral Department, St. Francis Catholic Church in Muncie, Indiana and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Indianapolis as well as individuals.
The Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the building. It will continue to exhibit and promote the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

Randy Salway: Early PortraitsRandy Salway was born in Fort Wayne and studied printmaking at Ball State University. He has exhibited work locally, regionally, and nationally in solo, group, and juried exhibitions. He has spent the past fourteen years installing the works of other artists as an exhibition preparator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the David Owsley Museum of Art. The early portraits in this exhibition are the first of his work to be on view in Muncie in nearly a decade and are meant to reintroduce the artist to the community. His recent work is scheduled to be on view later this year.

Paperchaser 2014Gallery 308 opens its PAPERCHASER 2014 exhibition with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 3. The 5th annual show is a juried art show featuring the artworks of contemporary artists working in paper-based media.
Paperchaser 2014 will be juried by Art Hazelwood. Hazelwood calls himself an artist, impresario and instigator. His artwork ranges from screen-print posters to fine press artist books and public art projects. His prints are in several collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Library of Congress. He currently teaches printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Dave Franklin, Gallery 308 Board President, said, “More than $1,200 in cash awards will be announced at the Gallery opening on April 3 including the Best of Show winner. The awards ceremony will be held at 6pm. The Best of Show winner also receives a solo exhibition in 2015.”
Gallery visitors will have the chance to see than 50 works-on-paper ranging from watercolor, to oils, to mixed media to photography. The exhibit will be on display through April 24. The gallery’s hours are Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free.
The exhibit is made possible by funding from Art Mart, Lyle Mannweiler Photography, Jack’s Camera, Gory Fine Art and Framing, and Indiana Public Radio.

Case StudiesBraydee Euliss has worked on every side of the world of art: student artist, artist, museum preparatory intern, gallery manager, patron, picture framer. A Muncie native, Euliss earned a BFA in Sculpture from Ball State University with a semester at Westminster College in London, England. She has also earned the title of “master framer,” according to her employer, Brian Gordy. Not only does she design and complete framing packages, but Euliss works on gilding projects, bringing old and antique frames back to their former golden glory. And, for the month of April, the talented artist will also be exhibiting in the Gordy gallery.
Case Studies is an exploratory and provocative exhibit that investigates institutional methods of 3-dimensional display. The pedestal, the vitrine, and various incarnations of both have been designed to unobtrusively showcase other objects. Case Studies asks the viewer to acknowledge the contextual framework of display and reconsider its furniture as a medium that filters our perception of what is contained within.
Conceptual and provocative, the exhibit re-focuses the viewer’s mind to the boxes, structures – furniture – that typically serve as silent support for art and objects. A question is being asked, “How does the framework of display filter our perception of what is contained within?”
Euliss has participated in numerous solo and group exhibits, including Select Fair in Miami, FL, Contexture at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts in Miller, IN, 23rd Minnetrista Annual, 73rd , 74th & 75th Annual Student Art Shows (BSU), Reclaiming Show, Atrium Gallery (BSU), and the Whitewater Valley Annual at IU East, Richmond, IN and several group shows, including Monkey Thunder, RE Monkey Thunder, Bodega at the Murphy Arts Building, Indianapolis, IN, and Resurfaced at Savage’s Ale House, Muncie. The artist was selected for the Art Faculty Award for Outstanding Senior Art Student at BSU in 2010. Other awards include the Muncie Art Students League Annual BSU Student Art Award in 2009 and the Lucia Mysch Scholarship Award in 2009.
The opening reception for “Case Studies” will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown gallery. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will be introduced at 6:15 PM for a short talk, and to answer questions about her work. The exhibit will continue through April 30, 2014, and may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Napkin SketchesMuncie Makes will feature napkin sketches created by students and community members alike after being given the prompt “What does Muncie mean to you?”. These sketches will be complemented by other various artwork and projects from students from Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning. Students in an interdisciplinary studio have been working all semester to reopen the building into a gallery/workshop space. The April 3rd First Thursday will mark the official reopening of the building.

I've been commissioned by everyone from Disney to American Greetings, Western Publishing to Mayflower Movers, and many lesser known entities. As a result, I simply don't own a lot of my original work.
"Throughout the years, I've had the opportunity to do a few drawings and paintings for my own amusement, however, much of these works have been sold or given to family members or close friends. These days, I do tend to hoard what few pieces I do."

Join us for a panel discussion at the David Owsley Museum of Art featuring David and Sarojini Johnson in conversation with friends from the world of printmaking. This event is related to the special exhibition A Wild Story: The David and Sarojini Johnson Print Collection, on view now through May 21. The panelists - including Teddy Lepley, Colleen McKenna, and Nathaniel Russell - will share perspectives on their own practice, printmaking, and the exhibition.
The museum will be open to the public for a 5:00 p.m. reception for visitors who wish to view the related exhibition prior to the 6:00 p.m. panel discussion. This event is free and open to the public, with no registration required.
